Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Athens, the Κτίριο Δοξιαδη stands as a testament to architectural evolution. Originally designed in 1957 by Constantinos Doxiadis, this building first served as his office and the Doxiadis School of Technicians. Today, it has been transformed into the “One Athens” residential complex. The architects at Divercity sought to honor the building’s history while adapting it to modern needs. They achieved this by preserving key features like the atrium, the original construction grid, and the escalating volumes that follow the sloping site. Imagine standing here, where the past and present intertwine. The original facade’s module has been reimagined as a three-component pixelated surface. Glass, translucent concrete, and marble panels create a dynamic interplay of light and shadow, revealing glimpses of Mount Lycabettus and the Acropolis. Inside, the ribbed concrete ceilings of Doxiadis’s design are exposed, a tribute to his technological prowess. The herringbone timber floors and marble-clad bathrooms evoke the golden age of Athenian apartments in the 1960s and 70s. The ground floor of Κτίριο Δοξιαδη now buzzes with communal life. An indoor pool, gym, meeting room, and crèche are arranged around the central atrium, fostering a sense of community reminiscent of the Modern Movement. The atrium, with its marble floor and reflecting pool, serves as a vibrant hub. It connects the residents to the city and houses a permanent exhibition on the life and work of Doxiadis. The Κτίριο Δοξιαδη is more than just a building. It’s a living narrative of architectural innovation and urban renewal, a place where the echoes of the past harmonize with the rhythms of the present.
