Rising from the earth, the Yandun stands as a silent witness. It has observed centuries of Beijing’s history. The Yandun initially appears as an unassuming square platform. Yet, its story is deeply intertwined with the city’s fortunes. The Yandun’s history stretches back to the Yuan dynasty. It began as an earthen platform, possibly a beacon or a ceremonial site. The Yandun’s purpose isn’t entirely clear from historical records. But its location suggests its importance in the city’s symbolic landscape. Positioned south of the city, the Yandun played a role in the “five ward” system. This system reflected the ancient Chinese belief in the balance of the five elements. The south was associated with fire. The Yandun, possibly used as a fire beacon, reinforced this connection. During the Ming dynasty, the Yandun’s structure evolved. In 1553, during the construction of Beijing’s outer city wall, the earthen platform was encased in brick. The Yandun was now a more permanent fixture, its presence solidified in the city’s fabric. Centuries later, during the Qing dynasty, the Yandun underwent further transformation. Under the Qianlong Emperor, the Yandun received a striking addition. A stone stele, known as the “Nine Dragons Precious Canopy Stone Stele”, was erected on its summit. This stele, inscribed with two essays by the Qianlong Emperor himself, added another layer of significance to the Yandun. One essay, the “Imperial Capital Inscription,” praises Beijing’s geographical advantages and advocates for virtuous governance. The other, the “Royal Capital Inscription,” reflects on the prosperity of the Qing dynasty while hinting at the emperor’s anxieties about its future. The Yandun’s story continues into the modern era. Once surrounded by farmland, it later became the site of a warehouse and even faced the threat of demolition. Thankfully, its historical value was recognized, and in 1984, the Yandun was designated as a protected cultural relic. Today, the Yandun stands within a small park. It serves as a reminder of Beijing’s rich history and the enduring power of ancient beliefs. The Yandun may be small, but it offers a glimpse into the complex interplay of politics, symbolism, and urban development that has shaped Beijing over the centuries. It’s a story etched in brick and stone. It is a testament to the city’s fascinating past.
