Hidden within Seoul’s bustling Seocho District lies Nae-dong a neighborhood steeped in history and natural beauty. Its story begins long ago when it was part of the ancient Eonju district. The area then known as ‘Angol’ or ‘Anmal’ flourished near the foot of Guryong Mountain. Over time this central village transformed into the Nae-dong we know today.

Nestled in a basin surrounded by mountains Nae-dong boasts a unique geographical setting. Guryong Mountain in Seocho District and Inneungsan which borders Seongnam define its landscape. The area’s mountainous terrain once supported dense forests home to wildlife such as tigers and foxes. This wild landscape limited residential development during the Joseon period. The historical Heoninreung royal tomb further restricted growth.

Naegok-dong’s history is intertwined with the Gyeongju Kim clan. This influential family was among the first settlers. A significant event shaped Nae-dong’s past. Yeongneung the original burial site of the illustrious King Sejong the Great was moved from its location on Guryong Mountain in Naegok-dong to Yeoju in 1469. Today Hyeonneung and Inneung two other royal tombs remain in Nae-dong. These are located at 13-1 San. These tombs are reminders of the area’s rich royal heritage.

Even today Nae-dong’s character is shaped by its past. The neighborhood maintains its identity despite modernization. Several natural villages continue to thrive within Nae-dong. These include Heonneungmal Saemmaeul Neunganmaeul and Sinheungmaeul. These villages demonstrate the enduring spirit of community. Modern Nae-dong also includes educational institutions like Naegok Elementary School and Eonnam Elementary School. Daniel High School provides secondary education. These schools educate the current generation. They are a testament to Nae-dong’s continued progress. Nae-dong’s past present and future intertwine. The area stands as a fascinating blend of history nature and modern life. It is a testament to Seoul’s enduring spirit.
