Doesn’t that emblem above the entrance of Iglesia de Torices look peaceful? This is Iglesia de Torices. It is more than just a building. It is a part of the community’s heart.

Iglesia de Torices stands as a testament to faith and community spirit. The church’s story began when the Carmelitas Descalzos arrived in Cartagena. It was November 4, 1931. Archbishop Pedro Adán Brioschi appointed them administrators. They took charge of the Iglesia del Cabrero.

In 1938 the Carmelitas moved to Torices. They first stayed in a small house. It was on the grounds of the Colegio Eucarístico de Torices. This was at the corner of Bogotá and Julio Arboleda streets. Soon, the community helped them build a church next door. They named it San José. Every March 19, they celebrated with a big procession.

Padre Antonio was key. He was a beloved Carmelita priest. He won the hearts of Torices residents. He offered a smile, advice and comfort to those in need. Padre Antonio served as the parish priest from 1938 until his death on May 30, 1968. There was a short break from 1954 to 1960. He was the most cherished priest in Cartagena. He comforted the sick and needy. He guided children and teens in their faith. He strengthened his parish. He wanted it to thrive even after he was gone.

Another priest named Cirilo worked at the Iglesia de Torices for some years. He was from Spain. The neighborhood youngsters knew him well. He did not like them playing near the church. Whenever they played baseball with rag balls and Father Cirilo noticed, he would come out waving a broomstick. Ironically, Armando Niño Bueno Crisón lived right across from that field. He was a baseball star from Cartagena. Julio Blanch Calvo lived a block away. He was a well known baseball writer.

The Iglesia de Torices has masses at 7 am and 6:30 pm. People find peace here. Some think the sound during services could be better. Overall, Iglesia de Torices is seen as a safe and welcoming place.

The Iglesia San José de Torices is more than an old building. It is a place where people celebrate life. They celebrate faith. They find support. They connect with their community. It is a lasting symbol of hope in the Torices neighborhood.
