Gazing upon this seemingly ordinary plaque, one might overlook the vibrant history etched within the bronze of the Baltimore Block. This plaque, firmly anchored to its pole, commemorates more than just a building; it represents a unique slice of Baltimore transplanted into the heart of Atlanta. The Baltimore Block, an unexpected sight in a city known for shotgun houses and duplexes, stands as a testament to the vision of Baltimore native Jacob J. Rosenthal. In 1885, he introduced Atlanta to the concept of row houses, a style prevalent in his hometown. These eight brick rowhouses, built on long-term ground leases, a common practice in Baltimore, were a novel approach to high-density housing in Atlanta. Originally fourteen units, these “apartment-type” dwellings offered modern amenities like central heating and gas fixtures, attracting socially prominent families and professionals. The Baltimore Block pulsed with life, a symbol of upscale living. However, by the 1920s, tastes changed, and the Baltimore Block’s popularity waned. Four units met the wrecking ball, and the remaining structures fell into disrepair. The once-grand homes became a refuge for vagrants, a stark contrast to their former glory. A revival began in the 1930s as artists and other creative individuals recognized the potential of these forgotten gems. They breathed new life into the Baltimore Block, transforming the spaces into smaller apartments and studios. The block became a haven for artists, writers, and even a French countess, fostering a unique bohemian atmosphere. Sadly, two more buildings were lost in 1954 due to flawed renovations. The 1960s saw the Baltimore Block evolve into a countercultural hub, hosting coffeehouses and bars. Later, offices, galleries, and shops joined the mix, creating a vibrant, eclectic community. Finally, in 1989, all units came under single ownership for the first time. The Baltimore Block underwent extensive renovations, transforming into the modern office space we see today, while still retaining its historical charm. A new L-shaped, five-story addition complemented the original structures, blending the old with the new. So, as you stand before the Baltimore Block plaque, remember that it signifies more than just bricks and mortar. It tells a story of changing times, resilience, and the enduring spirit of a community that refused to let a piece of history fade away.
