The story of New Genesis Missionary Baptist Church traces back to the First Baptist Church of Detroit. This original church formed in 1827. Many of its early members were black. Detroit was a vital station on the Underground Railroad. The church attracted many ex-slaves seeking refuge.
In 1836 thirteen members sought to establish their own church. They received permission from the Territorial Legislature of Michigan. This new church became Second Baptist Church of Detroit. It marked Michigan’s first African American housed congregation.
Later African Americans relocated to Ferndale. They found themselves crossing Eight Mile Road to attend services. This led to the formation of Mount Beulah Baptist Church. It became another significant religious center.
In 1924 some members of Mount Beulah joined with Reverend Talbert and Reverend Smith. They established Mount Lebanon Baptist Church. The name later changed to First Baptist Church. Reverend Smith served as pastor until 1931. Reverend Theodore Williams then took the helm. The church’s membership grew significantly under his leadership.
Reverend Williams departed in 1935. He founded Berean Tabernacle. Reverend Samuel Pyles succeeded him. Pyles began rebuilding First Baptist Church. He passed away in 1938 before completing the project. Reverend Sandy Gibson completed his term.
In June 1939 Reverend Charles B. Heath became pastor. He finished the rebuilding work started by Reverend Pyles. During his time it was discovered that another church in Detroit shared the name First Baptist Church. On January 7 1945 Deacon Howard Wills proposed a name change. The church became New Prospect Baptist Church. Growth continued but the building became too small.
Reverend Heath explored purchasing the Duke Theatre. It was located on Eight Mile Road and Wyoming in Ferndale. The congregation did not support this purchase. In 1953 the church voted to enlarge the building. The members financed the project.
In March 1960 Reverend Heath arranged for the congregation to tour a building. It was located on Pembroke and Stoepel. The members borrowed money for a down payment. Reverend Heath passed away in 1967 after 28 years of service.
Reverend James Kinchen briefly served until February 1968. Then Reverend Dr. Samuel Leon Whitney from Mississippi became pastor. Under his leadership the church expanded. He emphasized civic engagement and tithing. The church paid off its mortgage and purchased properties. The fellowship hall was refurbished and named C.B. Heath Hall.
The church’s name evolved to New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church. Reverend Whitney led the construction of a new sanctuary. It included a baptism pool a fellowship hall and modern audio equipment. During construction services were held in the Howard Wills building.
Reverend Whitney served for 22 years. In 1991 his son Reverend Dr. Keith L. Whitney became pastor. He served until 1996. He served as an observer in South Africa for Nelson Mandela’s election.
In 1996 Reverend Randolph F. Henlon became Interim Pastor. He had served under both Whitneys. He remained until 1999.
On March 1 1999 Reverend Dr. Wilma R. Johnson became Senior Pastor. She promised to teach preach love and pray. Membership and stewardship increased under her leadership. She envisioned multipurpose classrooms administrative offices and a library. She coined the phrase “The Church where the Spirit of Unity Abides”. This phrase united old and new worship styles. Reverend Johnson served for 17 years. She passed away in 2016.
In 2016 the pastoral staff maintained the church’s ministries. Reverend Carnel Richardson Reverend Dr. Craig Ester and Reverend Dr. April Hearn led the church. They continued community outreach. During the COVID-19 pandemic they continued to preach teach and minister. On August 1 2024 Reverend Dr. Craig Ester became Lead Pastoral Minister. He continues to lead New Prospect today.
