“Two pagodas?” a young monk whispered, tracing the lines on an ancient sema stone at Preah Theat Pagoda. “But why?” Our journey to Preah Theat Pagoda begins with this very question, a mystery that unravels across centuries of devotion and artistry. Preah Theat Pagoda, nestled 20km south of Phnom Penh’s heart, isn’t just one pagoda, but two. The southern pagoda stands sentinel atop an ancient site, guarding a bell-shaped stupa within its walls. The other pagoda, its contemporary companion, rises beside it, creating a harmonious balance between old and new. Between these two pagodas lies a tapestry of history woven with remnants of eras long past. Ornate balustrades, weathered shale and sandstone slabs, and pedestals in varying styles whisper tales of devotion. A headless torso of a female deity, adorned with intricate neck jewelry, stands as a silent testament to ancient artistry. Another torso, a fragmented Buddha on Naga, and a seated figure clutching an unknown object hint at stories yet untold. A fragment of a Hamsa, the sacred goose, adds another layer to this historical puzzle. These fragments aren’t merely stones; they’re pieces of a puzzle spanning centuries. The 7th-century whispers through a sandstone plinth inscribed with names and offerings of rice fields and clothing. This inscription, discovered in 1909 and now residing in the Phnom Penh Museum, connects us to the earliest days of Preah Theat Pagoda. The Angkor era echoes in the ornate balustrades, while sema fragments speak of continued use in the post-Angkor period. A lintel, depicting Indra or a three-headed Airvata flanked by medallions of Shiva and a praying Brahmin, further enriches the artistic narrative. French researcher, Lunet de La Jonquière, documented Preah Theat Pagoda in the 1900s, noting the older, almost abandoned southern pagoda and its flourishing northern counterpart. He described the vihara of the southern pagoda, built atop a two-story terrace, guarded by sandstone lions. He marveled at the lintel depicting Indra, Shiva, and the Brahmin, surrounded by other sculptural fragments. Within the vihara, he found a stupa in place of a Buddha statue, fronted by five sandstone Buddhas sheltered by Nagas, painted in vibrant colors. Preah Theat Pagoda is more than just a temple; it’s a living museum. It is a place where whispers of the past intertwine with the prayers of the present, creating a unique spiritual symphony. It is a place where two pagodas stand as a testament to the enduring power of faith and the captivating beauty of Cambodian heritage.
