Is it possible for a small village to simply vanish? Practically, within living memory, Cascina Mongiardino was just that – a self-governing village. Today, standing here in front of the old farmhouse, it’s hard to imagine. Cascina Mongiardino existed as its own entity until the year 1878. At that time, it was absorbed into the municipality of Villanova del Sillaro. Before its absorption, Cascina Mongiardino was a small agricultural village with a long history. Its territory included the hamlets of Agugera and Monticelli. Interestingly, during the Napoleonic era, between 1809 and 1816, Mongiardino was briefly made part of Fissiraga. It regained its independence with the formation of the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia. However, this independence was short-lived, culminating in its absorption into Villanova del Sillaro. Despite its seemingly quiet end, the story of Cascina Mongiardino stands as a testament to the ever-changing landscape of history.
