The year is 1868. Dortmunder Actien-Brauerei AG wasn’t yet a giant. It was a bold new steam brewery. Laurenz Fischer Heinrich and Friedrich Mauritz and master brewer Heinrich Herberz had a vision. They saw potential in Dortmund’s burgeoning coal and steel industry. They built a brewery.

This is where it all began. Right here before you stands the legacy of their ambition. Dortmunder Actien-Brauerei AG quickly established itself. It expanded its operations. A malthouse was added. Business boomed.

In 1872 the brewery became a joint-stock company. It took on the name Dortmunder Actien-Brauerei. That name became synonymous with quality. Its beers won awards. They were shipped across the globe. Africa India Japan and Australia all tasted the Dortmund brew.

A pivotal moment arrived in 1881. Carl Linde himself supervised installation of a refrigeration machine. This allowed the brewery to master bottom fermentation. It ensured the consistently high quality of their beer.

The brewery thrived. By 1885 production exceeded 100000 hectoliters. This was a remarkable achievement for the time. The Paris World’s Fair in 1900 awarded DAB a gold medal. The prestigious Prussian State Medal followed in 1913.

World War I disrupted production. But the brewery persevered. In 1917 it even got its own railway sidings. The post-war years were challenging. The war had nearly destroyed Dortmund. But the brewery rebuilt. By 1949 a new DAB brewery was operational.

The 1950s and 60s brought more innovation. DAB switched from wooden to aluminum barrels. They invested in lightweight plastic crates. They embraced modern bottle technology. They continually pushed the boundaries of brewing technology.

The acquisition of Hansa-Brauerei in 1971 was a significant move. It further solidified DAB’s position in the Dortmund brewing scene. A massive new brewery was built in 1983. It was state-of-the-art technology for its time. The Ruhr area’s largest brewery was born.

Throughout its history Dortmunder Actien-Brauerei AG has faced numerous challenges. It has adapted to changing times and consumer preferences. Today it remains an iconic part of Dortmund’s heritage. It is a testament to the enduring power of quality and innovation. And here you stand at the heart of it all. The legacy lives on in every drop of DAB beer.
