Across the shimmering expanse of Beihai Lake, the White Dagoba beckons. It stands as a silent sentinel, watching over Beihai Park. This park isn’t just a green space. It’s a living tapestry woven with over a thousand years of history, nestled in the heart of Beijing. Emperors strolled these paths. They sought the mythical lands of Penglai, Yingzhou, and Fangzhang, where gods held the secrets to immortality. Beihai Park became their earthly representation of these magical realms. The lake mirroring the vast Taiye Pool. Qionghua Island, Circular City, and Xishantai Island standing in for the fabled mountains. The park began its life in the Liao Dynasty. Each subsequent dynasty, from Jin to Yuan, Ming, and Qing, left its mark, adding layers to the park’s rich narrative. Emperor Qianlong’s extensive renovations during the Qing Dynasty shaped much of what we see today. The White Dagoba itself has a story to tell. Built in 1651, it replaced the Palace in the Moon, where Kublai Khan once hosted Marco Polo. A Tibetan lama inspired its creation. Emperor Shunzhi saw it as a symbol of his Buddhist faith and a testament to the unity of China’s diverse ethnic groups. Earthquakes twice ravaged the dagoba, but each time it was painstakingly rebuilt. Today, it stands 37 meters tall, crowned with bronze canopies and bells. Within its walls are sacred Buddhist scriptures, a monk’s mantle and alms bowl, and two pieces of Sarira. From its lofty perch, it offers breathtaking views of Beihai Park. Cross the Zhishan Bridge to explore the eastern shore. Discover the Hao Pu Creek Garden. Built in 1757, it’s a garden within a garden, inspired by a philosophical debate between Zhuangzi and Huizi. Emperor Qianlong, captivated by their story, designed the garden as a place of tranquility, a refuge from the world. The Nine-Dragon Screen, a marvel of glazed tiles, depicts 635 dragons in vibrant detail. Nearby, the Five-Dragon Pavilions offer stunning views of the White Dagoba. These pavilions, dating back to 1602, were once a place for emperors to fish and admire the moon. Beihai Park opened its gates to the public in 1925. Now, visitors from around the world can experience its magic. It’s a place where history whispers through the leaves and legends shimmer on the lake. A timeless oasis in the bustling city.
