Beneath those Romanesque arches lies a tale of faith. I will tell you the story of St. Joseph’s Wangfujing Cathedral. This cathedral is more than just a building. It is a testament to resilience and cultural exchange.
St. Joseph’s Wangfujing Cathedral, also known as Dongtang or the East Church, welcomes you. Its history began in 1653. Italian Jesuit astronomer Father Lodovico Buglio established a congregation. He was joined by Portuguese Jesuit Gabriel de Magalhães.
Emperor Shunzhi gifted them land. This act of generosity allowed them to build their church. At that time, the Jesuits were the only Europeans allowed to live in Beijing because of their knowledge of astronomy. The church also became Buglio’s residence.
The early years were marked by upheaval. In 1720, an earthquake damaged the church. Fire consumed it ninety years later. Anti-Western sentiment led to the destruction of what remained.
The Second Opium War in 1860 changed things. Foreign missionaries returned. St. Joseph’s Wangfujing Cathedral was rebuilt. However, anti-foreign feelings persisted.
The Boxer Rebellion in 1900 saw the church burned to the ground once more. It was rebuilt in 1904 in the Romanesque Revival style. Pilasters and three bell towers were added.
In 1949, the Communists took power. They tried to eliminate religion. St. Joseph’s Wangfujing Cathedral was seized and turned into a school in the 1950s. The government established the Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association or CPCA. Since 1957, St. Joseph’s has been under the CPCA’s control. The Vatican does not recognize its priests.
The Cultural Revolution brought more hardship. In 1966, St. Joseph’s Wangfujing Cathedral was closed. It suffered further damage until 1976.
The government later funded restoration efforts. St. Joseph’s Wangfujing Cathedral reopened in 1980. Another renovation was completed in 2000.
St. Joseph’s Wangfujing Cathedral stands as a blend of European and Chinese elements. A plaque tells its history. A large square surrounds the church with a Madonna and Child statue.
Today, St. Joseph’s Wangfujing Cathedral continues to serve its community. It is a symbol of faith and perseverance. It has witnessed centuries of change.
