Have you ever felt the thrill of encountering a majestic creature face to face? Right here at Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City you can. This isn’t just any zoo. It’s a living testament to conservation and a window into the incredible diversity of our planet.

Hogle Zoo boasts a rich history. It began its journey in Liberty Park in 1911. The zoo wasn’t always grand. It started small with just a few animals. In 1916 a star arrived Princess Alice an Asian elephant. She captivated audiences. However Princess Alice had a penchant for escape. She’d frequently roam Salt Lake City’s streets. This prompted a move. The Hogle family generously donated land at Emigration Canyon’s mouth. In 1931 the zoo found its permanent home.

The zoo houses over 800 animals representing 249 species. You’ll find everything from the impressive Great Apes exhibit featuring western lowland gorillas and Bornean orangutans to Rocky Shores a stunning habitat showcasing Pacific Northwest wildlife including polar bears. Did you know Hogle Zoo’s success with polar bear breeding is renowned? The zoo has played a vital role in ensuring the survival of endangered species through carefully managed breeding programs.

Explore the Asian Highlands exhibit. It’s inspired by the Himalayan villages. This exhibit showcases the remarkable adaptations of animals from the cold central Asian regions. Amur leopards snow leopards and red pandas call this place home. Hogle Zoo’s breeding success with Amur leopards is a conservation success story. This endangered big cat population has benefitted significantly from the zoo’s efforts.

Don’t miss the Small Animal Building. Opened in 1971 it showcases animals based on their biome. It’s one of the few remaining exhibits of its kind in North America. The building is set for renovation but it remains a fascinating glimpse into a different approach to zoological displays. The African Savanna exhibit is equally impressive. It features a mix of species including giraffes zebras and lions all coexisting as they would in their natural habitat. The meerkat enclosure is a recent addition. It’s a popular spot offering up close views of these highly social creatures.

Finally the Wild Utah exhibit celebrates Utah’s own amazing wildlife. This expansive new addition introduces you to mountain lions desert bighorn sheep and other native species. It emphasizes the importance of local conservation efforts.

Hogle Zoo isn’t just a place to see animals. It’s a journey. A journey through diverse habitats a journey into conservation and a journey that leaves you deeply impressed by the beauty and resilience of the natural world. Your visit here will not disappoint.
