Taxes fund futures. Welcome to the Utah State Tax Commission in Salt Lake City. Here, revenue is collected for Utah and its local governments. The commission also administers tax and motor vehicle laws.
The Utah State Tax Commission’s main offices are here in Salt Lake City. Additional offices are located around the state. The executive director runs the Tax Commission’s day-to-day operations. The four tax commissioners appoint the executive director. The governor then approves this appointment.
Scott W. Smith is the current Executive Director. He graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. He is a Certified Public Accountant and a Certified Public Manager. Scott started his career as a Tax Auditor at the Tax Commission. He developed auditing procedures and manuals. He also assisted in the development of computer applications and templates.
As Deputy Tax Division Director, Scott implemented the Streamlined Sales Tax Project. This brought the Tax Commission into compliance with new legislation. Scott became the Tax Commission’s Deputy Executive Director in 2011. He directed the rewrite of the motor vehicle system. VADRS was successfully implemented under his direction. In 2015, he managed the inclusion of Property Tax into the GenTax system.
The Utah Senate confirmed Scott as the Executive Director in November 2018. He desires to create user-friendly interfaces for taxpayers. He also wants to make it more difficult to commit fraud. He wants to allow great people to do great work.
The Utah State Tax Commission is committed to helping taxpayers. The answers to most questions are found on the website. For security reasons, TAP e-services are not available in most countries outside the United States.

The Taxpayer Advocate Service helps people who have been unable to resolve a state tax issue. This service should not be used to bypass normal methods for resolving disputes or issues. The Taxpayer Advocate Service prepares a monthly report summarizing all Taxpayer Advocate issues.
