Whispers of history echo around the magnificent Miaoying Temple. Here, before the towering White Dagoba, time seems to swirl like incense smoke. Miaoying Temple, also known as the White Stupa Temple or White Dagoba Temple, rests peacefully in Beijing’s Xicheng District. Its namesake, the brilliant white dagoba, is one of two such structures in Beijing, the other residing in Beihai Park. Miaoying Temple’s story is a tapestry woven with threads of imperial ambition and spiritual devotion. In 1271, Kublai Khan, the formidable Mongol leader, commissioned the White Dagoba’s construction. It was a symbol of unity, meant to solidify the bond between the newly established Yuan Dynasty and the influential monks of Tibet. Upon the dagoba’s completion in 1279, Kublai Khan decreed that a temple be built, encompassing the area an arrow could reach when shot from the dagoba’s peak. This grand temple, originally named ‘Dashengshou Wan’an Temple,’ and the dagoba earned the nickname “Golden City and Jade Dagoba.” Tragedy struck in 1368 when the temple was consumed by fire, leaving only the resilient White Dagoba standing. Almost a century later, in 1457, Emperor Tianshun of the Ming Dynasty ordered the temple’s reconstruction. Although smaller than its predecessor, the reborn temple was given the name it holds to this day: Miaoying Temple. During the Yuan Dynasty, Miaoying Temple served as a vital imperial temple, hosting rehearsals for important ceremonies. Even Kublai Khan’s own sacrificial ceremony was held within these walls, highlighting its significance. Later, during the Qing Dynasty, Miaoying Temple became a beloved spot for temple fairs, giving rise to the saying, “August eighth, time to visit the white dagoba.” Even today, the tradition continues with devotees circling the dagoba, offering prayers and music on the anniversary of its completion. The White Dagoba itself is a testament to the enduring friendship between China and Nepal. Designed by the Nepali architect Arniko, it is the oldest and largest Tibetan dagoba in China. This architectural marvel, a key cultural relic under state protection, embodies both beauty and historical weight. As you stand here, at Miaoying Temple, imagine the echoes of chanting monks, the grandeur of imperial ceremonies, and the quiet reverence of those seeking blessings. The White Dagoba, a beacon of resilience and cultural exchange, whispers stories of a past that continues to shape the present.
