Remember Charles Godwin’s fateful tale as we stand here at Godwin Beach. Godwin Beach is a coastal rural locality in the City of Moreton Bay. It is named after Charles Godwin. He owned a fish cannery by the beach from 1897 to 1907.

The narrow sandy Godwin Beach stretches along the residential area. It’s near The Esplanade. The coastline transforms into a mangrove forest as you move away from here.

Let’s delve into the story of Charles Godwin. In January 1911, the steamer Eastern ran aground. It was stranded on the Salamander Bank, near Moreton Island. Barrels of oil drifted into the sea. Godwin was hired to salvage the barrels and take them to Brisbane.

Tragedy struck on February 20, 1911. Godwin was thrown from his boat in rough seas. This happened off Toorbul Point. Sadly, he drowned. His legacy lives on in the name of this beach.

Circa 1999, a monument commemorating Godwin was erected on the beachfront. It serves as a reminder of his life and the perils of the sea.

Godwin Beach is more than just a scenic spot. It’s a place steeped in history. In 2021, Godwin Beach had a population of 487 people.

Godwin Beach Esplanade Park offers beach access. It also has play equipment. Barbecues and fitness equipment are available for everyone to use.

While you’re here, take a moment to appreciate the surroundings. The area has reservoirs and mangrove wetlands. Native vegetation is grazed upon in the centre. The north has rural residential housing with larger land parcels. Near The Esplanade, you’ll find smaller suburban lots.

Godwin Beach provides a mix of natural beauty and historical significance. It’s a place where you can relax. You can also reflect on the past.

The Beachmere Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses was built in 1992. It is located at 470 Bestmann Road.

As you explore Godwin Beach, imagine life in the early 1900s. Picture Charles Godwin running his cannery. Consider the events that led to the naming of this locality.
