Imagine standing where Ming and Qing astronomers once stood. Here at the Beijing Ancient Observatory, they gazed at the stars without telescopes. This observatory is one of the oldest stellar observation sites in the world.
The Beijing Ancient Observatory’s history stretches back centuries. It began as a smaller observatory in 1227. The current structure was built in 1442 during the Ming Dynasty. For centuries, it helped Chinese emperors understand the heavens. They believed the sky’s movements mirrored events on Earth.
Take a look around at the instruments. These aren’t modern telescopes. Instead, these are ornate bronze instruments. They include sextants, azimuth theodolites, and armillary spheres. Dragons, lions, and floral swirls decorate the metalwork. The Beijing Ancient Observatory’s tools combined Western and Eastern knowledge.
Many of the original instruments were stolen and recovered. Invading countries and changing political regimes took them. But the instruments always returned to the Beijing Ancient Observatory. Some Ming era instruments are now at Purple Mountain Observatory in Nanjing.

The Jesuit Ferdinand Verbiest played a key role here. In the 17th century, he won an astronomy contest. He then took charge of the observatory. Verbiest supervised the rebuilding of some instruments in 1673. He and other Jesuits helped improve star and planet observations.
The Beijing Ancient Observatory also has a connection to European missionaries. Men like Matteo Ricci and Manuel Dias brought Western astronomical knowledge to China. They presented instruments as gifts. This sparked the emperors’ curiosity. They wanted to know more about Western astronomy.
Several missionaries even led the Directorate of Astronomy. They helped create the state calendar. The bronze instruments show their contribution to scientific exchange.
