“How far we’ve come is important”, Alvin Wright once said about McGee Chapel. Today, we stand before a testament to faith, resilience, and community. McGee Chapel Missionary Baptist Church has been a beacon of hope for over 140 years. Its story is deeply rooted in the history of Harris County.
In 1869, David McGee, a former slave, purchased 370 acres of land. This land became known as the McGee Settlement. It was here that the seeds of McGee Chapel were sown. A group of devout Christians began holding prayer services in each other’s homes. As their numbers grew, the need for a dedicated space became clear.
In 1912, the community built a chapel off Goar Road. Rev. P.A. McGee, a descendant of David McGee, became the first pastor. However, accessing the church was challenging. Parishioners had to cross fields and private property. During heavy rains, they waded through knee-deep mud to attend services. Imagine the dedication it took to maintain their faith under such conditions.
The congregation decided to move the church to a more accessible location. Between 1919 and 1921, they literally moved the church. They placed the building on logs and hitched it to a team of mules. Chains secured the church as it was pulled onto roller logs. The moving process took several days. Finally, on a Sunday morning, McGee Chapel arrived at its current location on Highway 6. What an incredible feat of community and faith.
McGee Chapel became more than just a place of worship. It was a center for community needs and social events. The church served as a distribution point for clothes, shoes, and medicine. It was a place where people could find support and fellowship. An unwavering faith in God sustained the congregation through challenging times.
Alvin Wright, a longtime member, played a key role in preserving the church’s history. He spent hours researching documents at the Harris County Courthouse. Wright uncovered the detail that David McGee was a freed slave. This discovery deepened his interest in the church’s story. Wright and other church members compiled their research into a book in 1996. They are now working on a new edition to cover the history from 1996 to today.
McGee Chapel stands as a reminder of the past. It shows how far the community has come. It’s a symbol of faith, resilience, and the importance of remembering our history.
