Could this unassuming house really have been home to a First Lady? Here, at the Gardiner-Tyler House, it’s not hard to imagine Julia Gardiner Tyler, the former First Lady, taking in the Staten Island air. Built around 1835, this grand two-story house, with its stately Greek Revival design, stands as a testament to a bygone era. The Gardiner-Tyler House boasts an elegant, symmetrical facade and is wrapped in classic clapboards. Look up and you’ll see its most striking feature: a magnificent two-story portico supported by four fluted Corinthian columns. It’s a true example of the Greek Revival style that was so popular in the early 19th century. Interestingly, this house wasn’t built for Julia Gardiner Tyler originally. Her parents, Juliana and David Gardiner, purchased it for her. It was only after her marriage to President John Tyler in 1844 that she lived here from 1868 to 1874. Today, the Gardiner-Tyler House stands as a proud reminder of Staten Island’s rich history and the legacy of a woman who, though married to a President, lived a life full of its own unique stories.
