Journey with me back to 1922. Imagine the wave of Greek refugees arriving in Athens after the Greco-Turkish War. They carried with them memories of their ancestral home, Philadelphia, in Asia Minor. Seeking solace and a new beginning, they founded Nea Filadelfeia, “New Philadelphia,” a testament to their resilience. The Municipal Unit of Nea Filadelfeia stands as a symbol of this fresh start. It became a haven for these displaced families. Officially, Nea Filadelfeia is a suburb nestled just 6 km north of Athens’ bustling city center. Since the 2011 local government reform, it has been part of the municipality Filadelfeia-Chalkidona. Nea Filadelfeia boasts a rich sporting history. It’s the home of AEK, a major Greek multi-sports club founded in 1924 right here in Nea Filadelfeia. From 1930 to 2003, the now-demolished Nikos Goumas Stadium echoed with the cheers of AEK fans. The stadium witnessed historic matches, including AEK Athens versus Roma in 2002 and a game against Real Madrid the same year. The new Agia Sophia Stadium now stands proudly in its place, a continuation of the area’s sporting legacy. Nea Filadelfeia isn’t just about sports. The Alsos Neas Filadelfias park, a sprawling green space, provides a welcome escape. Did you know that this park once housed a large zoo? It operated from 1955 to 1995. Sadly, it’s no longer there, but the park retains its tranquil charm. Nea Filadelfeia holds a unique distinction. Meteorological records show it experiences some of Greece’s highest mean maximum summer temperatures. In 2007, during a scorching heatwave, Nea Filadelfeia recorded a staggering 46.2°C, just shy of the 47.5°C recorded at a nearby weather station – the highest ever recorded in Europe for June. As we stroll through the streets of Nea Filadelfeia, we trace the footsteps of remarkable figures like actress Elena Nathanael and Ange Postecoglou, the former Australian national football team coach. Nea Filadelfeia’s story is etched into the very fabric of this place, a narrative of displacement, resilience, and community.
