Built in 1443 it stands as a testament to the Ming Dynasty’s architectural prowess. Commissioned by Wang Zhen a powerful eunuch it’s more than just bricks and mortar.
The Temple of Wisdom Attained is a significant Buddhist temple. It showcases a unique blend of Buddhist scripture murals music and art. Imagine the dedication and resources it took to create this complex. The sprawling grounds cover approximately two hectares. It’s one of the largest and best-preserved Ming Dynasty temple complexes in old Beijing. Notice the striking black roof tiles a distinctive feature of this temple.
Step inside the Zhihua Gate. This isn’t just any entrance. It’s a gateway to centuries of history and ritual. Originally home to statues of Maitreya Wei Tuo and the Four Heavenly Kings it now hosts exhibitions and musical performances. Listen closely you might hear the echoes of centuries-old ritual music. This music has been passed down through 27 generations of musicians. The haunting melodies played on instruments like the guanzi dizi sheng and yunluo are truly remarkable.
Explore the Zhihua Hall the heart of the temple. It houses Ming Dynasty statues of Buddhas Bodhisattvas and dharmapalas. Sadly some of the original statues were moved. They were relocated to other temples in Beijing. Yet other Ming Dynasty statues remain in the hall. Admire the stunning Ming Dynasty murals depicting Ksitigarbha Yanluo Wang and the Ten Kings of Hell.
Don’t miss the Tathagata Hall and Thousand Buddha Pavilion. This impressive two-story building houses numerous Buddha statues. The upper floor the Thousand Buddha Pavilion is named for its 9999 Buddha niches. Imagine the devotion that went into creating such a space.
