“Lion Bridge”. Does that name spark your curiosity? Today, we’re not just passing over another bridge. We’re walking across one of Osaka’s most iconic landmarks: the Nakamoto-bashi Bridge.

While not officially called Lion Bridge like its more famous cousin, Namba Bridge, Nakamoto-bashi Bridge shares a connection to Osaka’s rich history. Namba Bridge is also known as Lion Bridge because of the lion statues placed at four locations along the bridge. These bridges, like Nakamoto-bashi Bridge, serve as vital arteries connecting different parts of the city. They are steeped in stories waiting to be discovered.

Namba Bridge, affectionately nicknamed “Lion Bridge”, has been around since the Edo period. Imagine this bridge as a wooden structure spanning Nambabashi-suji. It stretched west of Sakaisuji. The northern part was Hinoue-cho. The southern part was Kitahama 1-chome. It was a Kogi Bridge under the direct control of the Shogunate. People watched fireworks and enjoyed the cool evening breeze here.

In 1912, the bridge moved to its current location. This happened when the Sakaisuji tram line extended. It went from Kitahama to Tenjinbashi 6-chome. The design aimed to create an urban landscape. It featured gorgeous lighting and wide stone stairs. These stairs lead down to Nakanoshima Park.

Just a short walk away from the Namba Bridge lies the bustling Kitahama Station. Modern retro buildings cluster nearby. Among them is the Osaka Stock Exchange. Nakamoto-bashi Bridge and its neighboring Namba Bridge stand as testaments to Osaka’s blend of historical charm and modern progress.

These bridges not only facilitate movement. They also offer vantage points to observe the city’s ever-changing tapestry. Nakamoto-bashi Bridge might not have stone lions guarding its corners. Yet, it shares in the legacy of Osaka’s bridges. Each bridge tells a story of connection, history, and the enduring spirit of this vibrant city. As you cross the Nakamoto-bashi Bridge, take a moment to appreciate its role. It’s a role in the grand narrative of Osaka.
