“Lost, are we?” a kind voice startled me. I turned to see an elderly woman, her eyes twinkling. “You seem to be searching for something at Nhà thờ Đông Tiến.” She gestured towards the striking, pillarless structure. Nhà thờ Đông Tiến. The name resonated with a quiet strength. The woman, it turned out, had lived in the shadow of the church her entire life. She remembered a time, in the late 1950s, when this area, now bustling, was desolate and empty. Slowly, a community began to sprout. Makeshift homes and military camps dotted the landscape. Among these early residents, a shared desire for a spiritual haven grew. They pooled their meager resources, their faith as their cornerstone. They built a small, simple chapel. It became the heart of their community, nestled near what is now Thành Thái Street. Nhà thờ Đông Tiến began as this humble testament to faith. Years later, in 1965, Father Giuse Đinh Cao Thuận, recognizing the growing needs of the community, petitioned the authorities for land. He envisioned a new, grander church. His vision materialized into the very Nhà thờ Đông Tiến we stand before today. The architects, Ngô Viết Thụ and Lê Anh Kiệt, designed a unique building, a modern marvel that evoked the charm of a highland home. It was the first pillarless church in the Saigon Archdiocese. Its open, airy design, remarkably, has stood the test of time. Next to the main church, a tall, slender bell tower reaches towards the sky. Its top crowned with a statue of Jesus Christ the King, a beacon visible from afar. Surrounding Nhà thờ Đông Tiến, lush greenery provides a tranquil sanctuary. A small park at the front of the church, a serene pond within the grounds, invite moments of reflection. Nhà thờ Đông Tiến is more than just a place of worship. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of a community, built on faith and perseverance. It’s a beacon of hope and a place of solace in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City.
