Beneath this gracious 19th-century stone Victorian mansion lies a trove of Philadelphia’s artistic soul. This is Woodmere Art Museum. It first opened its doors in 1940. But its story began long before that.

Charles Knox Smith purchased this estate in 1898. He had a vision. He wanted to create a showcase for his art collection. Smith desired to awaken the spirit and knowledge of art in Philadelphia.

Woodmere Art Museum stands on six acres in Chestnut Hill. The building and grounds reflect Smith’s gift. They embody his intent to blend art and nature. Today Woodmere continues his mission. It is a lively art center.
