The Chiesa di Sancto Gerhardo is a relatively recent addition to Monza’s religious landscape. Architect Ercole Balossi-Merlo designed it. He also designed the nearby old Umberto I Hospital of San Gerardo. Construction began in 1894. It concluded in 1896 with its official inauguration. The church is dedicated to San Gerardo dei Tintori. He’s a co-patron saint of Monza.
Its neoclassical style is subtle. A slightly pronounced portico tops a tympanum. Two granite columns flank the entrance facing Via Magenta. A secondary entrance provides access to the hospital grounds. The church’s modest size belies its importance. It served as a parish church for San Gerardo dei Tintori. A small chapel dedicated to San Carlo is attached to the exterior.
Don’t confuse this Chiesa di Sancto Gerhardo with other churches dedicated to San Gerardo in Monza. There’s an older church. It’s located in the Piazzetta San Gerardo accessible from Via Lecco. An even older church San Gerardino stands in the courtyard of the saint’s childhood home. This one faced the bridge dedicated to San Gerardo. Initially this smaller church was dedicated to Milan’s patron saint Sant’Ambrogio.
The altarpiece features an encaustic image of San Gerardo dei Tintori. Monza artist Gerardo Bianchi painted it. This artwork stands as a lasting tribute to the saint. The hospital nearby was dedicated to Umberto I for several decades. It’s now dedicated to its founder San Gerardo dei Tintori. Locals call it the “old hospital” to distinguish it from the newer San Gerardo hospital. The newer one sits on the border with Lissone and Vedano.
