Standing here at Sheldon Road Church, one can’t help but wonder about its beginnings. This wasn’t always a place of worship. Once, this land was a tranquil dairy farm. Imagine cows grazing where we now stand.
In 1949, Sheldon Road was a simple two-lane path. Dense foliage grew from Broad Street to the church’s side. It was a very different landscape. Then, Reverend Clyde Ketchum envisioned something more. He purchased the land himself. On April 14, 1968, he opened the doors to Sheldon Road Chapel.
Citrus Park Baptist Church supported Reverend Ketchum’s vision. He reached out to friends for help. Many responded, even his military friends. Remarkably, Sheldon Road Baptist Chapel remained debt-free during most of Reverend Ketchum’s time as pastor. Donations, tithes, and volunteer work made this possible. Reverend Ketchum was a talented artist. He often created chalk drawings during Sunday night services. These drawings depicted scripture and illustrated songs.
In October 1973, Brother Dennis Clemons became interim pastor. He served until a new pastor was found. Bay Ceia Baptist Church then took over sponsorship. Soon after, Reverend Jesse Albritton became the full-time pastor. Under his leadership, Sheldon Road Baptist Chapel officially became Sheldon Road Baptist Church on September 7, 1975.
Brother Dennis Clemons returned as interim pastor in May 1976. Then, in September 1976, Reverend Stanley E. Young Sr. took the role. Reverend Young worked as a chaplain at the seaport. For years, Sheldon Road Baptist Church showed their support. They filled shoeboxes for foreign sailors at Christmas.
January 1, 1977, marked the arrival of Reverend Ray Walls as the full-time pastor. Many improvements followed. Landscaping projects transformed the grounds. A parking lot and sidewalks were added. Shrubs were planted. The three crosses on the hill became a distinctive landmark. Chimes were installed enriching both the church and community. More property was acquired in December 1986.
Music has always been vital here at Sheldon Road Church. The first piano, a concert grand, was donated by a friend of Reverend Ketchum. It served the church for many years. A utility building for equipment was also donated by a member. Organs have been gifted as well.
From 1999 to 2010, Reverend Russell Carter led Sheldon Road Baptist Church. He oversaw the addition of stone to the front of the church. The baptistery was remodeled. Changing rooms were created for both men and women and for the preacher. Reverend Carter retired in November 2010.
After Reverend Carter’s retirement, Reverend Tom Biles and others filled in. Finally, in August 2011, Reverend Mark Nunes was chosen as pastor. Today, Sheldon Road Church continues its mission. The church connects people with Jesus. It offers hope and more. It shares the Good News. Sheldon Road Church provides support to the community. It embodies Jesus’ love in practical ways. It also cares for God’s creation ensuring a thriving future. Sheldon Road Church has become a true community hub.
