“Emotions are running high in the country around the return of the remains of Jabotinsky and his wife,” a young Israeli man wrote in a private letter in 1964. It was the year the controversial Zionist leader Ze’ev Jabotinsky was finally laid to rest in Jerusalem at Mount Herzl Cemetery. This is the קבר זאב ויוהאנה ז’בוטינסקי, the tomb of Jabotinsky and his wife.

Jabotinsky, a controversial figure in life, remained so even in death. His vision of a Jewish state on both sides of the Jordan River, his call for mass Jewish immigration to Palestine, and his formation of the Jewish Legion and the Betar youth movement, all contributed to his lasting impact on Zionism. He died in 1940 in New York, his adopted home after being banned from Palestine by the British.

A clause in his will stated his wish to be buried in Palestine only when a Jewish government would allow it. That government, formed in 1948, was initially reluctant to grant his final wish. The first Prime Minister of Israel, David Ben-Gurion, considered Jabotinsky a political rival and refused the re-interment. It was not until Levi Eshkol became Prime Minister in 1964 that the decision was reversed.

The reburial was a momentous occasion, a testament to Jabotinsky’s enduring legacy and a symbol of reconciliation in a young nation still defining its identity. His tomb here, at the national cemetery of Israel, serves as a poignant reminder of the complexities of Zionist history, where heroes and their visions often clashed, leaving a legacy debated for generations to come.
