It is a portal to a time when San Marino, our landlocked jewel, aspired to be connected to the world by the marvel of electric rail. The Arco Vecchia Ferrovia, “Arch of the Old Railway,” marks the entrance to a ghost tunnel. This tunnel is part of what was once a remarkable feat of engineering: the Rimini-San Marino railway. Imagine this. In 1932, after just four years of construction, this electric railway roared to life. It carried promises of progress and connection, winding its way from the bustling Italian city of Rimini right to the heart of San Marino. For twelve short years, the railway thrived. It transported goods and people, bridging the gap between our mountaintop republic and the outside world. The journey was an attraction in itself. The train traversed seventeen tunnels, including two spiral tunnels, and navigated steep gradients. This testified to the brilliance of the engineers who designed it. The year 1944 brought devastation. World War II cast a long shadow, and during the bombing of San Marino, the railway suffered irreparable damage. Despite numerous attempts to revive the line, it was ultimately abandoned, its tracks falling silent. Yet, the Arco Vecchia Ferrovia stands defiant. It serves as a powerful testament to San Marino’s ambition and the enduring allure of dreams, even those cut short by history’s unforgiving hand.
