For a time it housed Temple Ohabei Shalom a Jewish Synagogue from 1887 to 1921. The Greek Orthodox community acquired the building in 1924. They have called it home ever since.

The acquisition of this exquisite building in 1924 wasn’t without its financial struggles. The Greek Orthodox community faced numerous challenges securing and maintaining it. The iconostasis for example was constructed by Mr Afentakis and is renowned as one of the finest in New England. The altar was a generous gift from Mrs Tsachlis. Other notable gifts include the icon stand donated by Mr Zarokanellis and candelabras from the Ladies Philoptochos Association.

Throughout its history Saint John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church has weathered storms both literal and financial.
