“Imagine a place where history echoes and futures begin.” That’s Yeonhui Middle School. It is nestled in the vibrant Seodaemun District of Seoul. This isn’t just any school. Yeonhui Middle School stands as a testament to Seoul’s enduring commitment to education. It also reflects its evolving identity.
Yeonhui-dong itself is a fascinating neighborhood. Its story enriches the context of the school. The name “Yonsei” comes from the combination of Yeonhui the former Yonhee College and Severance, the former Severance Union Medical College. This shows the area’s long-standing connection to education.
The neighborhood’s history is complex. During the Joseon period it was known by different names. Under Japanese occupation it became Yeonhui-jeong. It officially became Yeonhui-dong in 1946. The name honors the Yeonhuigung Palace. King Sejong often visited it. He even had the first Korean silk made there.
Interestingly, the southern part of Yeonhui-dong became Yeonnam-dong. This happened when it joined Mapo District in 1975. This detail illustrates the area’s changing boundaries.
While Yonsei University is nearby it is actually located in Sinchon-dong. Yeonhui-dong has two major foreign schools. These are Seoul Foreign School and Seoul Chinese School. This contributes to the area’s international atmosphere. Many expat families reside here too.
Seoul Foreign School has a rich history. It was founded in 1912. It now serves the international community of Seoul. It is spread across a world-class campus. This school offers a balanced educational program. It meets the academic, spiritual, social, and emotional needs of its students.
The school also celebrated 40 years of the British School and the IBDP in 2021-2022. It marked its 110th anniversary the same year.
The middle school building boasts excellent facilities. There is a large Design Lab with an integrated kitchen. There are also individually designed learning spaces. The Middle Years Library is internationally recognized for its design. It includes individual group and collaborative learning spaces.
Yeonhui Middle School is more than just a place of learning. It is a place where students explore their talents. The school provides a stimulating and secure environment for all. It prepares them to shape the future. It embraces a global perspective rooted in local history.
