Sledge Playground is named for New York City Police Officer Cecil Frank Sledge. He was born in Roanoke, Alabama on August 10, 1944. Sledge’s life was one of service and dedication.
In 1961, Cecil Sledge enlisted in the Army. He was stationed in the New York City area. He served until his honorable discharge in 1965. Sledge achieved the rank of Sergeant First Class in the Army Reserve. He showed commitment even after his active duty.
Cecil Sledge married Linda Sudjian in 1972. They built a family together. They had two children named Richard and Corinne. Sledge balanced family life with his professional pursuits.
Sledge earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the New York Institute of Technology in 1977. He continued his education while serving his community. His dedication to learning is truly admirable.
Now, let’s explore what Sledge Playground offers today. The playground is open from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. It is accessible to everyone including wheelchair users.
Sledge Playground features several accessible amenities. Companion seating is available with space for wheelchair users. There are benches with backs and armrests for comfortable seating. You can also find accessible game tables. Accessible drinking fountains ensure everyone stays hydrated.
The playground also offers inclusive play elements. Sensory-friendly spaces are designed for children with autism spectrum disorders. While there aren’t multi-sensory play experiences, the playground is still great fun. Water-based play features add excitement for children.
Although ramps and mobility transfer systems are not available, Sledge Playground offers accessible play elements. Accessible swings are absent here. Yet the community can still come together.
