On a crisp autumn day in 1996, the USA Hockey Arena, then known as the Compuware Sports Arena, first opened its doors. Imagine the excitement as the Plymouth Whalers, the arena’s first major tenant, took to the freshly made ice. The USA Hockey Arena wasn’t just built for professional hockey. It was a dream realized by Peter Karmanos, the President of Compuware and owner of the Whalers. He envisioned a state-of-the-art facility to replace the aging Oak Park Ice Arena and the less-than-ideal setup at The Palace of Auburn Hills. Construction was remarkably swift, taking just six months to complete. The arena stands as a testament to Karmanos’s vision. The USA Hockey Arena boasts two impressive rinks. The main rink, an NHL-sized marvel, seats roughly 4,000 spectators. The second rink boasts an Olympic-sized ice surface. It has a unique seating arrangement with 800 seats on only one side. A clever design allows shared concession stands to serve both arenas simultaneously, maximizing efficiency. Beyond hockey, the USA Hockey Arena has hosted a variety of events. From the high-octane action of the Detroit Ignition indoor soccer team to the rhythmic beats of concerts by artists like Journey and Girl Talk, the arena has seen it all. Even professional wrestling has graced its space, with TNA hosting its Bound for Glory pay-per-view event in 2006. The arena isn’t just for professionals. It also plays host to the annual MHSAA high school state championships for boys ice hockey and serves as a venue for local high school graduations. The USA Hockey Foundation purchased the arena, renaming it the USA Hockey Arena. This marked a new chapter, solidifying its role as a central hub for American hockey.
