Gazing at Fontbonne Hall Academy, one might sense the echoes of its intriguing past. Fontbonne Hall Academy stands as a testament to the enduring power of education and faith. It was established in 1937 by the Sisters of St. Joseph. The building itself holds a fascinating history, predating its life as a school. Before 1937, this very structure housed a speakeasy and a casino, adding a touch of intrigue to its legacy.

Fontbonne Hall Academy is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a Catholic college preparatory school for young women, grades 6 through 12. Its mission is deeply rooted in the values of Jesus Christ. The school is inspired by the charism of the Sisters of Saint Joseph. The Sisters’ vision emphasizes unity, reconciliation, and inclusive love. These principles permeate every aspect of Fontbonne Hall Academy, shaping the educational experience of its students.

The school’s name honors Mother Saint John Fontbonne. She led the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph during the tumultuous period of the French Revolution. The academy’s early days saw a modest enrollment of forty students. The original building was complemented by a renovated carriage house which served as additional classrooms and a meeting space. Sister Dolorita, the first Superior and Principal, oversaw the allocation of these spaces. She ensured the effective use of the facilities for both the school and the Sisters residing there.

Fontbonne Hall Academy’s commitment to academic excellence fueled its growth. The campus expanded to include five buildings. The auditorium/gymnasium was built in 1940. The Sacred Heart Building was completed in 1951. The Ita Ford building, erected in 1980, is named in memory of Maryknoll Sister Ita Ford, a Fontbonne alumna. She tragically lost her life in El Salvador. This building now houses a state-of-the-art science and robotics lab. This addition makes Fontbonne a leader in STEAM education in the New York metropolitan area. The renovated first floor of the old carriage house, now Visitation Hall, houses the Visitation Program, a middle school program.

Fontbonne Hall Academy’s rich history spans over 80 years. It continues to provide a rigorous academic program within a nurturing environment. It empowers young women to grow spiritually, emotionally, and socially. The alumnae of Fontbonne Hall Academy carry their acquired skills and values into diverse professions. They contribute to the common good and strive to make the world a more just place.
