“What’s in a name?” the founders of Kingwood Bible Church asked themselves. That question echoes even today as we stand before this place of worship. Kingwood Bible Church is an independent Bible-believing Christian church. It is located right in the heart of Kingwood Texas.
Kingwood in the church’s name represents its emphasis on the local community. Bible signifies its commitment to God’s Word. Church reminds everyone that they are a family of God. They see themselves as a microcosm. They are not in competition with other ministries or civic groups.
Kingwood Bible Church’s story began with Salem residents. They belonged to the Dallas Oregon Mennonite Brethren Church. In May 1940, families started meeting for midweek prayer. They met in West Salem at a member’s home. That fall, 27 people signed a charter. They formed a new congregation. It was called the West Salem Mennonite Brethren Church.
In 1941, they built a sanctuary at 1125 Elm Street. A parsonage was built next door at 1111 Elm Street. Abe Loewen was the first pastor. He led from 1940 to 1946. In 1944, Rev. Loewen started Salem Bible Institute. The church expanded to host classes. In the fall of 1945, Salem Bible Institute merged. It joined with Beacon Bible School of Dallas. Together they formed Salem College and Academy now Salem Academy. From 1945 to 1947, the new school met at the West Salem MB Church.
In 1951, the church changed its name to Kingwood Bible Church. This was because it was in the Kingwood District of West Salem. The name also reflected the church’s focus on the Bible. Leonard Vogt led the church from 1960 to 1975. During his time as pastor, the church grew. A new sanctuary was needed. It was built in 1965. The new building connected to the 1940 structure. The original building became an educational wing. In 1970, a gymnasium and activity center were added. Over the years, Kingwood Bible Church has hosted area events. It has helped new churches get started.
Nathan Ensz is the current pastor of Kingwood Bible Church. The church is affiliated with the US Conference of Mennonite Brethren. They are connected to Fresno Pacific University and the MB Biblical Seminary.
Kingwood Bible Church offers Sunday School at 9:00 a.m. Worship service follows at 10:30 a.m. The services are also livestreamed on YouTube.
