High on the Hill of the Nymphs, the λόφος Νυμφών overlooks the ancient city of Athens. The λόφος Νυμφών is more than just a hill. It is a silent guardian, witnessing centuries of history unfold beneath its gaze. This is where the National Observatory of Athens, a beacon of scientific pursuit, has stood since the mid-19th century. The hill shares its slopes with the Philopappos Hill and offers breathtaking views of the Acropolis and the ancient Agora. The λόφος Νυμφών’s connection to the observatory began in 1842. A Greek-Austrian astronomer named Georgios Konstantinos Vouris, dreamed of establishing an observatory in his newly independent nation. Through persuasion and the generous funding of Baron Georgios Sinas, his dream became a reality. The observatory’s first building, a neoclassical structure with a central dome, was completed in 1846. It was one of the earliest buildings designed by the renowned architect Theophil Hansen. Vouris himself meticulously selected the instruments, including a state-of-the-art 7.5-inch Plössl refracting telescope. He meticulously charted the stars visible from Greece, a foundational work for the country’s mapping. He also studied the celestial dance of planets like Sirius, Neptune, and Mars. After Vouris, the λόφος Νυμφών welcomed another remarkable figure, Johann Friedrich Julius Schmidt. Schmidt’s meticulous observations over 25 years at the observatory led to the discovery of several variable stars and even a comet. His detailed lunar map, a two-meter wide masterpiece depicting 30,000 craters, remains a testament to his dedication. From the λόφος Νυμφών, Schmidt also delved into meteorology and seismology, expanding the observatory’s reach beyond the stars. The legacy of scientific exploration on the λόφος Νυμφών continued. Demetrios Eginitis, director from 1890 to 1934, oversaw a period of expansion and modernization. He secured funding, updated equipment, and established meteorological and seismological institutes alongside the astronomical one. Eginitis’s influence extended beyond the observatory walls. He introduced Eastern European Time to Greece and championed the adoption of the Gregorian calendar. Stavros Plakidis, who took the helm in the mid-20th century, furthered the observatory’s reputation in astrophysics. His work on variable stars, often in collaboration with Sir Arthur Eddington, earned him international recognition. Plakidis also advocated for moving observations away from the city lights, leading to the establishment of the Penteli Astronomical Station. Today, the National Observatory of Athens, rooted on the λόφος Νυμφών, continues to reach for the stars. From this historic hilltop, generations of scientists have explored the universe and expanded our understanding of the world around us.
