A monumental Romanesque crucifix greets you. It stands proudly in the Stiftspfarrkirche Seekirchen. This isn’t just any church. This is a place steeped in history. A place where legends intertwine with reality.
The Stiftspfarrkirche Seekirchen boasts a history stretching back to around 700 AD. Saint Rupert himself is said to have founded a church here. This was long before he made his way to Juvavum. The original structure sadly met its end. It was destroyed by floods and fires. The location shifted to Mühlberg for a time. But its story doesn’t end there.
In 1679 Archbishop Max Gandolf established a collegiate foundation. This significant event led to the construction of a three-story building. This structure served as a communal residence. It stood adjacent to the Stiftspfarrkirche Seekirchen. The priestly residence in Mühlberg was abandoned. The Mühlberg estate was then sold to nobles. The collegiate foundation thrived for a time. Seven priests a dean and six secular priests resided within its walls. A steward a schoolmaster a cantor an organist and four choristers completed the staff.
Yet the Stiftspfarrkirche Seekirchen and its collegiate foundation faced challenges. Napoleon’s troops attacked Salzburg in 1800. The foundation fell to Ferdinand III of Austria-Tuscany in 1803. Church silver was surrendered in 1805. Finally the foundation was dissolved in 1806.
But even suppression couldn’t erase the Stiftspfarrkirche Seekirchen from the map. It was re-established in 1832. This was by order of Emperor Franz I. After years of negotiations with Archbishop Maximilian Josef von Tarnóczy. New statutes were drawn up and signed in 1871. In 1879 the Stiftspfarrkirche Seekirchen received a papal privilege. It was elevated to a collegiate church with the title Collegiata insignis. The church even saw a resurgence of its collegiate chapter in 1996. New members were appointed. Franz Graber became the 22nd provost.
Today the Stiftspfarrkirche Seekirchen continues to stand tall. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of faith. It represents the resilience of a community. The church serves as a living reminder of a rich history. It whispers tales of saints archbishops and emperors. It is a destination for pilgrims and history buffs alike.
