Around 970 AD a piece of land in Ruttenscheid was mentioned in a document. This marks the first recorded history of Ruttenscheid a district now part of Essen. That’s right here where we stand.

Ruttenscheid’s name Riudenscethe possibly derives from hriudi meaning reed grass. Cutting this grass allowed the settlement to exist. This area became Ruttenscheid a name that echoes through the centuries.

For centuries Ruttenscheid remained largely rural. The old road from Essen to Werden now Ruttenscheider Strasse ran directly through it. A leper hospital and Siechenkapelle a chapel for the sick existed here. The patients lived in a secluded area in the forest. They lived there until about 1726. This small chapel stands as a testament to the past. It highlights Ruttenscheid’s deep roots in history.

In the 14th and 15th centuries several farms existed in the area later known as Montagsloch. These farms paid taxes to Essen Abbey or Werden Abbey. One farm the Silberkuhle is particularly noteworthy. Its history begins in 1354 when its land was sold for silver copper and lead mining. This marked the first documented mining in the Essen area. The legacy of these farms still shapes Ruttenscheid’s landscape.

Zeche Langenbrahm Ruttenscheid’s only colliery operated from 1772 to 1966. This mine played an important role in Ruttenscheid’s industrial past. The closure of Zeche Langenbrahm marked the end of an era for Ruttenscheid. Its impact is still felt today.

The Krupp settlement Altenhof built in 1890 provided housing exclusively for retired Krupp workers. This created a unique social structure within Ruttenscheid. The Altenhof settlement stands as a reminder of Essen’s industrial history and Ruttenscheid’s place within it.

The area has a rich history it is home to the Essen police headquarters and the Essen judicial center. Major companies like E.ON Ruhrbahn and Stadtwerke Essen are based here. Ruttenscheid’s role as an administrative and business hub is undeniable. It is a place of significant importance for the wider area.

Despite its industrial past Ruttenscheid also boasts significant cultural attractions. The Messe Essen the Grugapark and Grugahalle are world-renowned. Ruttenscheid also features three elementary schools a secondary school and two excellent high schools. Ruttenscheid combines industry commerce and education harmoniously.

Since the 1970s planners have focused on improving Ruttenscheid’s public transportation. The construction of the U11 subway line and tram lines beneath the Ruttenscheider Strasse transformed this central thoroughfare. Ruttenscheid boasts excellent connections to the rest of the Essen city.

From its humble beginnings as a rural settlement to its present status as a vibrant district of Essen Ruttenscheid offers an inspiring blend of history culture and modern life. Its unique story continues to unfold. Ruttenscheid is more than a district it’s a testament to resilience and progress.
