“The air feels different here, don’t you think?” whispered a woman to her companion. “Calmer, somehow.” She gestured towards the intricate carvings adorning Chùa Tuyền Lâm Pagoda. “It’s as if the weight of the city just melts away.” We are standing in front of Chùa Tuyền Lâm Pagoda a beacon of peace and tranquility nestled in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City. This place has a long history. It dates back to the late 19th century. Then, this area was merely a humble collection of thatched huts surrounded by rice paddies and waterways. It was during this time that a revered monk, Hòa thượng Thích Thiện Tín, sought refuge in this tranquil setting and established a small temple for meditation and spiritual practice. As the city grew the temple grew with it. It was renovated and expanded reflecting its importance in the community. Even today you can feel the sense of serenity as you enter the pagoda. The main hall is a masterpiece of traditional Vietnamese architecture. It features a three-structure layout known as “Tam” (“工”) where three halls stand parallel to one another. The central hall is the most impressive with its towering Buddha statue seated upon a lotus throne. Flanking the central Buddha are statues of Bồ Tát Quan Thế Âm, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, and Bồ Tát Địa Tạng, the Bodhisattva of Salvation. Chùa Tuyền Lâm houses a treasure trove of Buddhist artifacts including a bronze statue of Thích Ca Buddha and a sacred wooden statue of Bồ Tát Quan Thế Âm gifted from Myanmar. But perhaps the most unique feature of Chùa Tuyền Lâm is its Đào Tràng Bát Quan Trai. This meditation hall houses 140 Buddha statues making it the largest gathering place for Buddhist monks and nuns in District 6. The pagoda is not only a place for spiritual practice. It also serves as a vital community center hosting numerous religious and cultural events throughout the year. Chùa Tuyền Lâm stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Buddhism in Vietnam offering a refuge of peace and tranquility in the midst of this bustling city.
