A prominent corner. That’s where you’ll find Saint James Episcopal Church. Its flamboyant design is a landmark.

Saint James Episcopal Church boasts a rich history. It stands as a testament to Boston’s architectural heritage. Henry H Congdon designed this magnificent structure in 1888. It stands proudly at 1991 Massachusetts Avenue.

The church wasn’t always here. In fact long before its construction the site held another landmark: the Davenport Tavern. The tavern dated back to around 1757. Can you imagine the stories those walls could tell? The transition from tavern to church reflects Boston’s evolution. Saint James became a parish for many affluent families. Their summer homes were in the area then called Boston Highlands.

The church’s history is interwoven with the lives of its rectors. Reverend George Sherman Converse arrived in 1859. He brought with him a vitalizing influence. The Catholic movement inspired many changes. The church underwent renovations. A vested choir was introduced. Reverend Converse’s ministry extended beyond the wealthy. He reached out to the working class. His missionary spirit is evident in Saint James’s history.

This dedication to outreach continued. Saint James became a foundation for other churches. Saint John’s Church in Jamaica Plain is one example. Saint Anne’s Church in Dorchester another though that one is now closed. The influence of Saint James spread. This expansion demonstrates the church’s commitment to its community.

The church continued to evolve. It was a church for all. Reverend Frederic W Fitts further developed its liturgical practices. He emphasized the sacraments. His work strengthened the church’s spiritual and social aspects. This dedication to both evangelism and the laity defined the church.

Later Saint James merged with another congregation. In the 1960s Saint John’s and Saint James united. They formed Saint John St James Church. This merger reflects changing demographics and the evolving needs of the community. Their combined ministries continued to serve Roxbury. They provided essential services. Their dedication to their community reflects the lasting legacy of Saint James Episcopal Church.

Today Saint James continues its mission. It remains a place of worship. It remains a place of community. It’s a beautiful building. It stands as a testament to faith. It also stands as a landmark in Boston. It continues to inspire and serve its community. This church tells a compelling story. It’s a story of faith. It is a story of community. It is a story of Boston.
