The church wasn’t always here. In fact long before its construction the site held another landmark: the Davenport Tavern. The tavern dated back to around 1757. Can you imagine the stories those walls could tell? The transition from tavern to church reflects Boston’s evolution. Saint James became a parish for many affluent families. Their summer homes were in the area then called Boston Highlands.
The church’s history is interwoven with the lives of its rectors. Reverend George Sherman Converse arrived in 1859. He brought with him a vitalizing influence. The Catholic movement inspired many changes. The church underwent renovations. A vested choir was introduced. Reverend Converse’s ministry extended beyond the wealthy. Later Saint James merged with another congregation. In the 1960s Saint John’s and Saint James united. They formed Saint John St James Church. This merger reflects changing demographics and the evolving needs of the community. Their combined ministries continued to serve Roxbury. They provided essential services.
