Established in 1979, Ashiya City Shiomi Elementary School has been a cornerstone of the Shiomi community for over four decades. Did you know that the school’s founding date is celebrated each year on November 1st? Ashiya City Shiomi Elementary School is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a place where young minds are nurtured and where the community comes together. The school’s motto, “Learn, Support, and Be Kind,” reflects its commitment to fostering well-rounded individuals. The Great Hanshin Earthquake in 1995 caused significant disruption, forcing a 14-day closure. The school reopened on February 2nd to a reduced student body, with only 229 of the 665 students able to attend initially. The school served simple meals to students and staff, and gradually restored full meal service as gas and water lines were repaired. Temporary housing was built on the school grounds to accommodate 30 families displaced by the earthquake. By the start of the new school year in April, 95% of the students had returned. Ashiya City Shiomi Elementary School is also deeply involved in community initiatives. The school actively collaborates with local organizations on various projects, reinforcing its role as a community hub. The school also emphasizes environmental awareness. Students participate in recycling programs and learn about sustainability, cultivating a sense of responsibility towards the environment. Over the years, the school has undergone renovations and expansions to meet the evolving needs of its students. A computer room was added in 1999, and seismic retrofitting and large-scale renovations were undertaken in 2010. As you stand before Ashiya City Shiomi Elementary School, take a moment to appreciate its enduring presence in the community. It stands as a testament to the importance of education and community spirit.
