What whispers of devotion echo through the arches of Masjid Al Mubaraq? Masjid Al Mubaraq stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Islam in Karimun. This mosque, nestled in the heart of Meral, whispers tales of devotion and resilience that have shaped the community for generations. Masjid Al Mubaraq isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a historical landmark, deeply intertwined with the rich tapestry of Karimun’s past. Raja Abdullah bin Raja Ahmad Engku Tuah, a descendant of Raja Haji Fisabillilah and advisor to the Riau Kingdom, laid the foundation of Masjid Al Mubaraq. The year was 1825. The location was Meral, chosen for its strategic importance, both economically and politically, by the Riau Kingdom, whose center was on Penyengat Island. Masjid Al Mubaraq was more than a mosque. It symbolized Raja Abdullah’s commitment to his people. Built with his personal funds, it demonstrated his dedication to nurturing the faith within his community. The very name, “Al Mubaraq,” meaning “blessed” in Arabic, speaks to this intention. The mosque became a beacon of faith. It was a declaration that the people of Karimun had embraced Islam. Next to the mosque, the resting places of the Rajas and the mosque’s founders serve as a poignant reminder of their enduring legacy. The original structure was a blend of architectural styles, predominantly reflecting the traditions of Malay mosque design. It featured a distinctive roof, a fusion of four banana-like structures that tapered elegantly at the apex, covered with Melaka tiles arranged in an overlapping pattern. Like the historic Masjid Abdul Ghani on Buru Island, Masjid Al Mubaraq also had a ‘Kulah’, a well or reservoir for ritual ablutions. A unique feature of Masjid Al Mubaraq was its bell, used alongside the traditional ‘beduk’ drum to mark time. Every Friday, the bell’s chime announced midday, and throughout Ramadan, it marked the passing hours. While renovations in 2010 added a surrounding terrace, altering the original structure, the main roof still retains the essence of traditional Malay architecture. Today, Masjid Al Mubaraq continues to serve as a vital hub for the community. It remains a place for daily prayers, Quranic education for children, and a testament to the enduring power of faith.
