Can you believe that this beautiful synagogue, Congregation Rodfei Sholom, is still here after all these years? Standing in the heart of San Antonio, it has been a cornerstone of faith and community for over a century. Congregation Rodfei Sholom was established in 1909 by a group of Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe who sought to maintain their Orthodox traditions in their new home. They initially gathered in homes and rented halls but then built a small synagogue on Wyoming Street, a vibrant Jewish neighborhood at the time. The congregation continued to grow, and in 1918 they tore down the old synagogue and built a new one on the same site, where they held daily services and provided a mikvah. In the 1940s and 1950s, however, many of the congregation’s members started moving out of the neighborhood, and the congregation began to feel the effects of this demographic shift. In the 1960s and 1970s, many of the children and grandchildren of the congregation’s founding members began to move away from Orthodox Judaism. It was a tough time for Congregation Rodfei Sholom, but it wasn’t the end. In 1989, they bought a new plot of land and built a new synagogue on Northwest Military Highway. The synagogue’s current location is a testament to the resilience of the congregation, and it continues to be a vibrant community center, a place of worship, and a symbol of Jewish life in San Antonio.
