Surrounded by mountains Viseu stands as a beacon of history. Let’s explore Viseu. Viseu is a Portuguese city with a rich past. It is the capital of the Viseu district in the Centro Region. Viseu has seen many cultures. Romans, Suebs, Visigoths and Moors all left their mark.

The origins of Viseu stretch back before Roman times. Migrating groups settled here. Celts and Lusitanians called this place home. The Romans understood Viseu’s strategic importance. Viseu sat at the crossroads of vital Roman roads. These roads connected Mérida, Lisbon and Galicia. Viseu became a key Roman settlement.

Imagine Viriathus. He was the Lusitanian hero. Some say he was born near Viseu. After the Romans, the Visigoths came. By the 6th century Viseu was a city and a diocese.

Then came the North African Muslims. The Visigoths fled to the mountains. Viseu changed hands often during the Christian and Moorish conflicts. Moors called Viseu Bazu. Finally in 1058 Ferdinand I of León conquered it.

Viseu was devastated after Ferdinand’s siege. The Diocese of Viseu could not support a bishop until 1147. S. Teotónio helped Viseu regain its urban importance. Three centuries of peace allowed Viseu to grow again.

Viseu played a role in Portugal’s founding. Henry Count of Portugal and Countess Teresa lived here. They granted Viseu a foral in 1123. Their son Afonso Henriques may have been born in Viseu in 1109. He defended his rights and founded Portugal. In 1187 Viseu received a new charter. King Afonso II reinforced it in 1217.

During the 1383-85 Crisis Castile besieged Viseu. King John I built defenses to protect the city. Prince Henry the Navigator became Duke of Viseu in 1415.

Viseu continued to evolve. Vasco Fernandes was born here around 1475. He became a famous artist known as Grão Vasco. In 1513 King Manuel I renewed Viseu’s charter. The Rossio the first square in Viseu was opened.

The 19th century brought changes. A new Municipal Palace was built in the Rossio. This shifted the city’s focus away from the medieval center.

Today Viseu is a modern city. It is also a city full of history. The annual Fair of São Mateus dates back to 1188. Viseu is known for its handicrafts and the Dão wine region.

Explore Viseu’s green parks. Visit the cathedral and the Igreja da Misericórdia. Discover the Grão Vasco Museum. Stroll through the old streets. See the Casa do Miradouro with its Manueline window.

From the Roman era to the founding of Portugal Viseu has played an important role. Viseu offers visitors a blend of history and modern life. It is a city worth exploring.
