Ever wondered what secrets lie behind those imposing walls? HMP Barlinnie stands before you a formidable presence in Glasgow’s northeast. This isn’t just any prison. It’s Scotland’s largest a place steeped in history and infamous tales.

Barlinnie opened in 1882. Designed by Major General Thomas Bernard Collinson it was a revolutionary prison for its time. Inmates received individual cells a stark contrast to previous conditions. They also had access to classes in trades like baking blacksmithing and shoemaking. It was truly hailed as a step forward in prisoner rehabilitation.

But the story of Barlinnie isn’t all about progressive ideals. Its history includes darker chapters. Ten executions took place within its walls between 1946 and 1960. Famous executioners like the Pierrepoints and Harry Allen carried out these grim acts. The remains of these executed prisoners were buried in unmarked graves within the prison until renovations in 1997. Then they were exhumed and reburied elsewhere.

The prison wasn’t without its escapes. John Dobbie made a daring escape in a laundry van in 1985. He was caught five days later. His sentence was extended. Barlinnie also hosted the infamous Special Unit from 1973 to 1994. This unit focused on rehabilitation. It’s most famous success story is the transformation of Glasgow gangster Jimmy Boyle. He became a sculptor and author his experiences documented in his autobiography A Sense of Freedom. The Special Unit also produced other notable cultural works including Boyle’s play The Hardman and Larry Winters’ book The Silent Scream.

The prison has housed many notorious figures. Gangsters like Paul Ferris and Arthur Thompson spent time there. So did Abdelbaset al-Megrahi the Lockerbie bomber and former footballer Duncan Ferguson.

Overcrowding became a major problem in later years. Reports revealed appalling conditions including rats and cells condemned decades ago. HMP Barlinnie’s capacity was greatly exceeded. In 2018 plans were announced for closure. A new superjail was proposed. The building’s fate remains uncertain some propose turning it into a museum.

Today you see Barlinnie standing tall. A symbol of Scotland’s complex history. Its walls hold a multitude of stories tales of reform and brutality. HMP Barlinnie a place where history and infamy intertwine.
