Did you know that Świecko, a village near Frankfurt an der Oder, has a history stretching back to the 10th century? This place has seen centuries of change. It has been witness to both prosperity and immense suffering.

Świecko sits close to the German border. It is actually in Poland. The village is about 6 kilometers south of Słubice. It’s also about 66 kilometers southwest of Gorzów Wielkopolski.

Once, in 1354, Frankfurt bought Świecko. At the time, it was called Sweyt. Frankfurt acquired more than just land. The city gained farmers and cottages and rights. This gave the city council a seat in the state parliament.

Battles and wars marked Świecko’s path. In 1477, soldiers plundered the village. The Seven Years’ War brought more destruction. Russian armies burned Świecko to the ground in 1759. Only the forge survived.

Life in Świecko changed. The village became part of Prussia in the 18th century. By 1785, it had farmers, cottagers and even a schoolmaster. The 19th century brought both progress and disaster. A major fire in 1855 destroyed much of the village.

Świecko holds a dark chapter in its history. During World War II, the Nazis built the Oderblick labor camp here. They forced prisoners from many nations to work in brutal conditions. Poles, Belgians and Russians suffered here. The camp was under the control of the Gestapo. SS officers oversaw the suffering. Thousands of prisoners passed through its gates.

Typhus broke out in 1941. The camp was isolated. Almost all prisoners died. New prisoners arrived. They faced exhausting labor and abuse. Many died each week. Some took their own lives. In 1945, the Germans liquidated the camp. They sent prisoners on a death march. Sick prisoners were burned alive.

As World War II ended, residents fled Świecko. The Red Army took the village in 1945. After the war, Świecko became part of Poland again. Polish civilians resettled the village. A memorial was built in 1977. It honored the victims of the Nazi labor camp.

Today, Świecko stands as a reminder of resilience. It reminds us of the horrors of war. It is also a testament to the enduring spirit of its people. This village has moved from destruction to remembrance.
