Doesn’t it feel like stepping back in time when gazing upon McGovern Park? McGovern Park isn’t just any green space. It holds a piece of New York’s history within its boundaries.

Let’s delve into the story of McGovern Park and its surprising connection to a Victorian greenhouse. Once upon a time, a beautiful greenhouse stood near Green-Wood Cemetery. This wasn’t just any greenhouse. It was the Weir Greenhouse. It was a Victorian commercial greenhouse. In fact it was the only one left in New York City.

Built in 1895 by James Weir Jr. the greenhouse was a family affair. He ran the business with his son and grandson. Imagine this delicate structure of glass copper iron and wood. It must have overflowed with flowers. The Weirs operated their flower business for many years. Then in 1971 the McGovern family bought the greenhouse.

For a time the McGovern Weir sign towered above the building. It was visible for miles.

But times changed. The flower business wasn’t as profitable. The greenhouse fell into disrepair. Yet this unique building wasn’t forgotten.

In 2012 Green-Wood Cemetery stepped in. They bought the McGovern Weir Greenhouse. Their plan was to restore it. They want to create a visitor center and exhibition gallery.

Today McGovern Park offers more than just a place to sit. It offers a connection to this story. It offers a glimpse into a time when flowers bloomed. It offers a time when a family business thrived. As you stroll through McGovern Park remember the McGovern Weir Greenhouse. Think of its delicate glass its vibrant blooms and its enduring legacy. The greenhouse stands as a reminder of Brooklyn’s past. It is a testament to preservation and rebirth.
