How much power can a gasp generate? At the Basin Bridge Gas Turbine Power Station, the answer is a resounding 120 megawatts. This power station, located right here in Basin Bridge, Chennai, isn’t your typical power plant. It’s a vital part of Chennai’s power grid, humming to life during those crucial peak hours, from 6 am to 9 am and then again from 6 pm to 9 pm. Basin Bridge Gas Turbine Power Station was commissioned between February and March 1996. The project, costing a hefty ₹400 crores, brought together global expertise. The first two 30 MW units were supplied by Overseas Economic Co-operative Fund, Japan, while Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) provided the third and fourth. This power station is designed with flexibility in mind. It can run on a variety of fuels, including naphtha and natural gas. High-speed diesel gets the units going initially. Currently, naphtha is the primary fuel due to the limited availability of natural gas and LNG in Chennai. Basin Bridge Gas Turbine Power Station doesn’t just generate electricity. Since January 20, 2010, it has also played a key role in grid stability, acting as a synchronous condenser to maintain voltage and system stability. This means the plant operates in an open cycle mode, contributing to the efficient functioning of the entire power network. Even the cost of generation has been a factor, recorded at ₹9.72 per unit. The Basin Bridge Gas Turbine Power Station has also faced its share of challenges. On March 6, 2000, a fire broke out in Unit IV. Thankfully, the fire was contained without any casualties or disruption to power generation. The quick response of over 20 fire tenders and Metrowater tankers prevented a major disaster. This incident underscores the dedication and preparedness of the personnel who maintain this vital piece of Chennai’s infrastructure. So, the next time you flick a switch, remember the Basin Bridge Gas Turbine Power Station. It’s more than just a power plant. It’s a symbol of Chennai’s resilience, innovation, and commitment to keeping the city powered up.
