The cornerstone of Capela de Balteiro was blessed. It was August 19th 1967. This unassuming chapel holds a fascinating history.
Capela de Balteiro or Capela de Nossa Senhora Mãe dos Cristãos as it’s officially known is in Vilar de Andorinho. It’s the second public chapel built there. It serves the people of the parish and especially those in and around Balteiro. Its origins lie in a gift. D Francisca Pereira Tavares bequeathed a wooded area. This land became the site of Capela de Balteiro.
The chapel’s construction wasn’t without interesting details. A consortium of companies Soares da Costa SA Teixeira Duarte and Monte & Monte SA leased land. This was for the construction of the IP1 access roads. This included the Ponte do Freixo. The lease lasted for 20 months potentially renewable. It was for an area of approximately 17450 square meters. Monthly rent was 160000 escudos. From July 1994 to October 1998 the consortium donated these lease payments towards Capela de Balteiro’s construction.
The chapel opened in the early 1970s. Its exterior is simple. The interior however shows more detailed craftsmanship. While the outside is understated the interior is a testament to skilled artistry. Think of the dedication poured into every detail. Imagine the artisans working within its walls.
