A hushed reverence hangs in the air. This is New Life in Christ Missionary Baptist Church. Its story isn’t just etched in stone but woven into the very fabric of Houston’s history.
The church’s roots however are not here. They trace back to another congregation. Christ Missionary Baptist Church. Pastor James H Williams founded it in 1965. It was then located at Oxford and 40 1/2 streets in Independence Heights. Imagine the Williams family seven children and all moving into that new sanctuary.
Christ Missionary Baptist Church flourished. It spawned other churches. Rev Billy Williams became pastor in 1976. His ministry played a significant role in the growth of the original church. Other ministers emerged from this vibrant community. Rev Jimmie Williams founded New Canaan Missionary Baptist Church in 2007. Rev John Troy Hammond a remarkable preacher started his sermon career at just twelve years old.
The legacy of Pastor James H Williams extended beyond his own ministry. In 2007 Rev Billy Williams took over as pastor of Christ Missionary Baptist Church. Pastor James H Williams became Pastor Emeritus. He passed away on October 22 2012. His contribution to the spiritual life of Houston remains a powerful testament to faith and leadership. The second Sunday in June is set aside as Founder’s Day in his honor.
