Walking along Cobbs Creek, the legendary golf course, you’ll find yourself in the heart of Fairmount Park. Cobbs Creek is a course with a rich history. Designed by famous course architect Hugh Wilson in collaboration with the Philadelphia School of Golf Architecture, it was one of Philadelphia’s first public golf courses and was open to all players regardless of their gender or race. This meant men and women alike could swing away on its lush greens. It was on this course that Charlie Sifford, the first Black golfer to play on the PGA, honed his game. Other noteworthy players, including Arnold Palmer, Lucy Williams, Bob Hope, and boxer Joe Louis played on this course. Over the years, however, Cobbs Creek fell into disrepair. In 2018, the Cobbs Creek Foundation (CCF) took shape with the ambitious mission of bringing the legendary course back to life. The CCF wanted to breathe new life into the course and turn it into a multipurpose destination where people of all backgrounds could come together, learn, play, and gather. This wasn’t just about golf, it was about using the course to tell an inclusive story about Philadelphia’s past and present, and to create a place where the community could come together. The CCF needed to attract the attention of potential donors to fulfill their mission. Heavy, a branding agency, was brought in to help craft a story that would resonate with a wide range of individuals. The agency wanted to create a story that was both inclusive and persuasive. The Cobbs Creek story is about far more than just golf. It’s about how this iconic course tells the story of Philadelphia and its diverse community. It is about how the course has always been a place where people from all walks of life could come together. Today, the CCF continues to work hard to restore Cobbs Creek and preserve its storied legacy.
