Built in 1895 Schule Lehmkuhlenweg stands proudly. It’s a primary school in Hamburg’s Sülldorf district. The school grounds are vast about 18000 square meters. Imagine the children playing. They run across the expansive green fields. They are surrounded by meadows and pastures. This peaceful setting belies a rich history.

The first school in Sülldorf was established much earlier. Some say 1757 others around 1760. It was housed in a cottage dating back to 1739. This cottage was also home to the village shepherd. The original schoolhouse was rebuilt in 1760 and replaced in 1878 with a stone structure. That building is gone now. It stood near a pond where the current assembly hall is located.

1895 saw another new building. It was expanded in 1906. Parts of this building remain. They form the old main entrance and the administration area. A significant change came in 1939. Girls and boys began attending classes together. Two classroom buildings and a gymnasium were added in 1967. The gymnasium is no longer there.

By 1983-84 the school stopped having 5th grade classes. Schule Lehmkuhlenweg became a primary school. Major renovations followed from 2005 to 2010. The assembly hall and gymnasium were rebuilt. A new building Haus D was added in 2018. Today the school complex includes the administration building classrooms Haus B and C a sports hall and Haus D. Haus D has a canteen and gymnastics hall. Schule Lehmkuhlenweg continues to serve Sülldorf’s children. It is a testament to the community’s commitment to education. It boasts a long and fascinating past. Its buildings have witnessed generations of learning and growth.
